When it comes to a selling, there are arguably ten times as many things that are out of your control, as opposed to in your control. So why do we obsess over those external elements, when we can look at what is directly in our power to control?
One of the first things that is directly in any sales rep's control is his/her Attitude.
It may sound like an absolute cliche, but it really rings true. Being mindful of your attitude towards selling, and really anything in life, will help you reach desired outcomes.
So what exactly makes up a successful attitude in relation to sales? Here are a few things that come to mind:
- Belief
Aside from being one of my all-time favorite John Mayer songs, belief is absolutely crucial to success in any selling role. Belief takes on many forms, for example, belief in the value your product/service creates versus the belief that you can succeed. I think it's impossible to help your prospects and bring value, if you do not believe you can. One thing I do to make sure I am displaying belief is keeping a list of my core values, right in front of me. If I start out every day believing I am who I say I am, it becomes a lot easier to believe in myself, and convey value.
- Courage
Now I am not talking about the armored knight type of heroic courage, but more so courage on a smaller scale. The courage to pick up the phone after a bad phone call, or the courage to pushback on something you disagree with and iterate why. Being able to stand up for your beliefs, and convey value in a helpful way, make up what I consider sales courage. And you don't need to go ask Oz for it either
- Empathy
This is probably my personal favorite, because it takes you out of your internal bubble sphere. Simply put, develop a good attitude by putting yourself in someone else's shoes. See the world from your prospects point of view, and see if you can learn anything by taking that mindset. I guarantee you will learn something by adopting that mindset, and it is a crucial component of a successful selling attitude.
- Positivity
Having a mindset centered around positivity is another important element of a successful selling attitude. Consider what your self-limiting beliefs are if you find yourself being negative. Why are you being negative? How could you view this challenge or outcome in a more positive light? The best sales reps I know are always looking at life on the bright side, and can find a silver lining in any situation.
