There are many different approaches a songwriter can take when considering how to write a song and it is definitely a hot topic in music. Aside from drawing inspiration on what to write it is important to think about how your song should be structured, if it should rhyme, and what you want to say. Take these 4 songwriting ideas to think of and let the lyrics start to flow!
1.Structure
Making sure your lyrics and song match in terms of verse, chorus, bridge, and other songwriting elements is a crucial aspect to writing a complete piece of music. Two types of the most basic song structures are ABA (Verse-Chorus-Verse), and AABA (Verse-Verse-Bridge-Verse). Yet many songs take on advanced forms with varying forms of the intro, verse, and chorus and are outlined well here.
2. Left and Right Brain Synergy
Songwriting is as much about creativity as it is processes, and the perfect fusion of the two results in great music. By leveraging your emotions and "what you want to say" and then forming those words into well rhymed and timed (yes that was a rhyme about rhyming) ideas, a song can take life and transform into a story.
3. Time
Rome wasn't built in a day and great music isn't made overnight. Giving yourself time and adding snippets to your song can help it develop into something full and meaningful. Instead of sitting down and cranking out a fully written song with lyrics and instrumental built in, it proves more effective to songwrite and add music across a longer period of time. The best ideas take time to think about and develop!
4. Adapt
The best factor of learning how to write a song is that the end result is almost always something you did not expect. This process is meant to guide songwriters and give them inspiration, it isn't a set framework and the most important aspect is the ability to adapt. New ideas are constantly churning and shifting, and being able to move lyrics around, change notes and chords and keys, makes music unique and relevant. Songwriting is a process, but being able to adapt that process to fit each idea makes for a vast amount of ideas and material.
Learning how to write a song is different for every songwriter, and understanding what you want to get out of your song and music will guide you through the process (oh and this blog too).
Remember, these are just 4 songwriting ideas to think of and are things that have worked for some in the past. PLEASE feel free to comment with some ideas you like to use when songwriting and some of your own personal experiences!
PS happy songwriting :)
